What Project Management actually tests
If Contract Administration is the office, this is the site. It runs from staking the building through soils, earthwork, concrete, masonry, framing and envelope, and then tests whether you can keep people safe and read the documents that describe all of it. The state publishes the breakdown in its Examination Content Information sheet, and the weighting is dramatic.
The three content areas and their weights
- Construction Methods, Materials, Tools and Equipment — 63%. Nearly two-thirds of the part. Site layout and surveys, benchmarks, setbacks and easements, environmental impact; soils, compaction, Proctor, water tables and choosing a foundation for the conditions; earthwork, cut and fill, sheeting, shoring and dewatering, erosion control; concrete forming, placing, reinforcement, mixes and additives and quality control; masonry erection, bracing and grouting; wood framing, lumber grades, trusses, span tables, wind loads and fasteners; metal framing, pre-engineered buildings, welding and coatings; tilt-up, SIPs, ICF and slip forming; energy calculations, R- and U-values, building envelope and insulation; gypsum, plaster and stucco, moisture control, fireproofing penetrations and roof coverings; and cranes, hoisting and lift plans.
- Safety — 20%. OSHA compliance across site layout, soil conditions, shoring for concrete, bracing and erection, earthwork, formwork, framing, scaffolding, trench safety, ground-fault protection, construction equipment, field log record keeping, fall protection and job-site safety information requirements. Plus asbestos, lead paint, hazardous waste disposal and mold remediation.
- Reading Plans and Specifications — 17%. Reading and understanding plans and drawings including sections and views; the construction math that goes with reading drawings; architectural and engineering symbols, tables and specifications; interpreting shop drawings and submittals; and reading, understanding and applying codes and standards, including ADA requirements.
Safety is the best-value area on this part. It is a fifth of the questions, the rules are stable, and they are the easiest thing in the reference set to find under time pressure. Candidates who are short on prep time and skip safety are leaving the cheapest 20% on the table.
The math you will actually need
The ECI lists the same mathematics as the other part: area and volume, fractions, decimals and percentages, the sides of triangles, square roots and powers, and simple algebra for an unknown. Here it shows up as excavation volumes in cubic yards, concrete quantities, rafter lengths from run and pitch, stud and joist counts at a given spacing, R-value totals for an assembly, and scaling dimensions off a drawing.
Where candidates lose points
The 63% methods area is so broad that people try to study it evenly and end up thin everywhere. A better approach is to work it as the sub-topics it really is — site and soils, earthwork, concrete and masonry, framing and erection, envelope and finishes — which is exactly how our study guide splits it. The other common loss is treating this as a trade-experience exam. Twenty years of field work does not tell you the OSHA trench depth threshold or how a specification resolves a conflict with a drawing.
Preparing for this part
Work the heavy sub-areas one at a time in the study guide, keep safety in constant rotation because it is cheap to retain, then prove it under the clock with the timed 60-question simulation — same length and time limit as the real part.
